Esther Pt. 4: God Works in the Trenches
Opening Prayer
Lord,
We gather together echoing the words of the
ancient prayer of Richard of Chichester.
“Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ
for all the benefits you have won for me.
for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.
O most merciful Redeemer, Friend, and Brother,
May I see you more clearly,
Love you more dearly,
And follow you more nearly,
Day by day.”
Lord Jesus,
increase our insight into your ways.
Deepen our love for you.
Guide us to walk in your footsteps.
And may every day we live be a new experience of your grace,
so we may make a difference in the lives of others,
in your precious Name. Amen.

Scripture
Esther 8 (ESV)
8:1 On that day King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her. 2 And the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.
3 Then Esther spoke again to the king. She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan of Haman the Agagite and the plot that he had devised against the Jews. 4 When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, Esther rose and stood before the king. 5 And she said, “If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seems right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. 6 For how can I bear to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?” 7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows,[a] because he intended to lay hands on the Jews. 8 But you may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, and seal it with the king's ring, for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring cannot be revoked.”
9 The king's scribes were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day. And an edict was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, 127 provinces, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language. 10 And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed it with the king's signet ring. Then he sent the letters by mounted couriers riding on swift horses that were used in the king's service, bred from the royal stud, 11 saying that the king allowed the Jews who were in every city to gather and defend their lives, to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, children and women included, and to plunder their goods, 12 on one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. 13 A copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province, being publicly displayed to all peoples, and the Jews were to be ready on that day to take vengeance on their enemies. 14 So the couriers, mounted on their swift horses that were used in the king's service, rode out hurriedly, urged by the king's command. And the decree was issued in Susa the citadel.
15 Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown[b] and a robe of fine linen and purple, and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. 16 The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor. 17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.
Sermon
Life can feel like a war zone. It gets messy. Mistakes pile up. We try to improve a situation only to make it worse. Our shortsightedness results in long-term consequences. People collide, things break -- including hearts.
When that happens, does God step back and say, "Oh wow, things are too messed up, best let them sort this one out on their own." Of course not. Ours is the God of Angel Armies. If the earth is the Lord's and everything in it (Psalm 24:1), God is not put off by the trenches in his own battle zone.
This sermon explores Esther 8. Esther's people are scheduled for annihilation, but Mordechai comes up with a rescue plan. It's going to get real really fast. But God continues to work with his invisible, providential hand. We explore what happens, and receive encouragement for the battles we all continue to face.

Discussion Questions
- 1. As we continue through the book of Esther, how would you describe your awareness of God’s providence in your life or the life of those around you? Is it changing? Discuss.
2. Can you relate to Pastor Matthew’s comments in the introduction to the message about how it feels when times are really challenging? What emotions do you identify with this and how does God work in these situations when we are “in the trenches”?
3. What is the source of tension in the story this week as described by Pastor Matthew? What does it say about the King’s character? Is this consistent with his behaviour so far?
4. How does this set of circumstances relating to the law passed by Haman and then the reversal through the second law from Mordechai foreshadow the Christian gospel? Describe and discuss in the group.
5. What are examples of reversals so far in the Book of Esther?
6. What does it mean that “God works in the trenches”? What difference does this make to Christians?
7. Discuss in the group what stands in the way of us trusting the providential hand of God. How can we overcome barriers to this trust? Are there specific passages or events from the Bible that help you with this? Share in the group
8. “God can use even the wrong road to bring us to the right place” - John Orthberg. Consider your own struggles in the trenches. If you are comfortable, share a struggle in the group to pray for at the end of your Vine group meeting.
Deep Meditation
on God's Word
Pick a word or phrase that touches you the most from today’s scripture and share the grace that God has given you through your meditation. Pray based on today’s meditation.
Life Application
God is in your trenches.
Consider your own life and the trenches that you are experiencing. How do you remind yourself that God is always with you in them - he never leaves you? Remember that it is not trusting God’s timeline if you give him a deadline. Pray about this in the coming week, and ask for security in knowing that God is in the trenches with you, even if you do not currently see or understand it.
Closing in Prayer
Together, bring your words of praise, thanksgiving, confession and requests to the Lord who hears our every prayers
End together with the Lord's prayer:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.
